SAMM Site Profiles


Project READ’s Site Academic Measure Metafile (SAMM)* collects and charts data from a wide range of publicly available databases on the California Department of Education (CDE) Web site into a Site Profile layout showing demographics and Accountability Progress Reporting, such as Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) and Academic Performance Index (API), from the past five years at the school site level.

A SAMM Site Profile was provided as a PDF in Year 1 to each site for use as one component of examining student needs and outcomes in the planning process.

* SAMM is not the same as the READ 180 Scholastic Achievement Manager (SAM). Similar name, different functions and purposes.


Updates to SAMM

SAMM will generally be updated annually with new CDE data files. However, because key statewide testing data is not available for the 2013–14 school year, SAMM will next be updated when 2014–15 data is posted.

Project READ will let sites know when there is an update with new SAMM data and how to obtain the updated SAMM.


SAMM at Your Site

In Year 1, sites received funding to purchase FileMaker Pro 13. This is the software on which SAMM runs, allowing your school site to generate your own SAMM site profile and to view the SAMM site profiles of other Project READ sites.

Your site will not enter any data into SAMM. You will not need to learn how to use Filemaker Pro.


Purchase and Installation Instructions for Filemaker Pro 13 and SAMM

To be able to access SAMM and generate site profiles, each Project READ school site needs to obtain a single Filemaker Pro 13 workstation license for their site (the outright purchase, rather than the version with an annual cost or maintenance, is recommended). There was a $200 stipend in Year 1 to cover this cost.

Filemaker Pro 13 should be installed on the computer workstation of the administrative assistant most likely to be the one generating the SAMM Site profile reports. Follow the Filemaker Pro instructions to install it onto the chosen computer workstation, just as you would with any software.

Once Filemaker Pro 13 has been installed on a computer, download the SAMM file from the link on this Web page (below). We suggest creating a SAMM folder on that computer and putting the SAMM file into that folder. That way when there are updates to SAMM in future years, they can all go into that folder and your site will be able to access the latest version.

Using SAMM to Generate Site Profiles

Here's a quick review of the three main things you learned to do in the SAMM video above:


  1. Opening SAMM

Once Filemaker Pro 13 is installed and the SAMM file has been downloaded to a computer at your site, to open SAMM, simply double click (or click) on the SAMM file, the same way you would to open any file on your computer. SAMM will open and you’ll see the SAMM interface showing the site profile for one of the Project READ schools.

Note: A message may appear as SAMM opens: FileMaker cannot share a file because FileMaker network sharing is turned off.  Just click OK.

  1. Find the Site Profile for Your School

Go to the dropdown menu along the very top of your computer screen called “Records” and click on it. The first choice under that dropdown is “Find Schools.”  Click Find Schools and you’ll see that the SAMM interface is now blank and the cursor is blinking in the schools field. Type in the name of your school, then press Enter (the Return key) on your keyboard. That will bring up the site profile for your school. You can scroll down in SAMM to see the whole site profile.


To see the site profiles of other Project READ sites:

Go back to the Records dropdown and under it you will see the second option is “Show All Schools.” Click Show All Schools and the full set of site profiles will be accessible again to begin a new search.

Also, in the upper left corner of the SAMM interface, there’s an icon of a spiral bound book/rolodex with arrows. You can click the arrows to browse through the entire set of site profiles (when they are all showing).

If you are part of a district that has multiple Project READ sites, you can search for a “found set” of all your schools. After clicking Find Schools, in the blank SAMM interface, type the name of your district into the District field (right above the School field), and hit Enter. Use the rolodex icon to move between the different schools.

  1. Printing or Making a PDF of Your Site Profile

Once you’ve found your site profile, go to the dropdown menu along the top called “Printing” and click on it. The first choice under that dropdown is “Print Current School.” Click Print Current School and a dialogue box will open giving you a choice to Print, to Save PDF, or to Cancel. Make your choice and proceed as you would with any other document.

If you want to print or PDF a found set or group of schools (in a district for example, see above), under the Printing dropdown, you’ll find an option for “Print Found Schools.” Click Print Found Schools to create a single PDF containing all the site profiles of those schools, or to print them all at once.
